Natural staged facial reference showing fine lines and texture around the eyes; not an actual patient or treatment result

Periocular PN skin boosters use polynucleotide injectables in thin skin around the eyes to improve fine lines and texture, but do not correct all tear-trough hollowing, bulging fat or dark-circle causes. Small comparative trials and observational studies reported better texture and wrinkle measures, but products and assessments vary, so effect size and duration cannot be guaranteed. Bruising, swelling, raised injection-site bumps and rare infection, nodules and vascular complications must also be considered.

01

Definition, benefits and precautions at a glance

Key consultation points
CategoryWhat to check
DefinitionMedical procedure distributing small amounts of PN ingredients into periocular skin
Expected scopePossible limited improvement in fine lines, dryness and texture
LimitationsDoes not resolve all tear-trough hollows, bulging fat, pigmentary or vascular dark circles
Common recovery reactionsRaised bumps, swelling, bruising and tenderness can persist for the first several days
Immediate assessmentSevere pain, pallor or blue discoloration, blurred or double vision, pus and heat
02

Definitions and how the treatments work

PN broadly refers to high-molecular-weight DNA-derived fragments; raw material, concentration, viscosity and approved uses vary by product. Proposed aims include tissue-environment effects, water retention and extracellular-matrix responses, but how much each mechanism contributes to clinical periocular changes in humans has been studied only to a limited extent. “Salmon injection” alone does not establish identical composition or quality; its purpose differs from substantial filler volume replacement.

03

Potential benefits and limitations

A 2020 randomized split-face trial comparing periocular PN with non-crosslinked HA reported improvement in both groups, but sample size and follow-up were limited. A 2026 prospective observational study also reported improved patient-reported outcomes, but its uncontrolled case series cannot establish definitive efficacy. When fine lines involve expression muscles, sagging or photodamage, Botox, lasers, energy devices and fillers have different targets.

04

Suitable candidates and preliminary assessment

Adults mainly concerned about thin, dry periocular skin and fine lines may consult. Report severe tear-trough hollowing, lower-eyelid fat protrusion, dermatitis, infection, recurrent herpes, keloids, granulomas, medicines increasing bleeding risk, autoimmune disease, immunosuppression, pregnancy, breastfeeding, previous fillers, fat grafts or surgery. A fish-allergy history requires checking raw materials and purification against the actual product instructions.

05

Procedure, recovery and preparation

After cleansing, assess skin, fat, vessels, tear troughs and asymmetry under lighting, and confirm actual product name, total amount, injection sites and anaesthesia. Sites may temporarily bulge and bruise or swell; avoid treatment immediately before important photographs or departure. Avoid rubbing or squeezing; follow product-specific clinic instructions on resuming cleansing, makeup, contact lenses, exercise and sauna.

Staged aftercare reference with a cold compress and ordinary moisturiser around the eyes; not an actual prescription or product
06

Adverse effects, contraindications and precautions

Besides redness, swelling, bruising, tenderness and itching, asymmetry, persistent bumps, inflammatory nodules, infection and allergy may occur. Periocular injections are close to vessels and ocular structures; rare vascular occlusion and vision-damage risk cannot be reduced to 0. Severe pain, skin-colour changes, blurred or double vision, eyelid droop, rapidly spreading redness, pus or fever require immediate same-day assessment.

07

Differences between PN skin boosters, HA fillers and botulinum toxin

Comparison of procedure differences
MethodMain goalKey differences and precautions
PN skin boostersLimited improvement in periocular texture and fine linesVolume correction is not the main purpose; evidence is limited
HA fillersVolume replacement in selected areas such as tear troughsConsider swelling, unevenness, vascular occlusion and the Tyndall effect
Botulinum toxinReduced movement of periocular expression musclesDoes not fill static lines or hollows; eyelid or smile asymmetry is possible
Lasers and energy devicesDevice-specific pigment, vascular or firmness targetsCheck skin colour, downtime, eye protection and actual approval
08

Questions and answers for a medical consultation

The answers below are literature-based consultation questions, not a clinician interview or individual diagnosis; actual medical review remains incomplete.

Q. Does under-eye Rejuran remove dark circles too?

A. Dark circles mix pigment, vessels, shadows and bulging fat; PN injections alone do not eliminate all causes.

Q. Are raised injection bumps normal?

A. Small initial bumps and swelling are possible, but worsening pain, heat, colour changes or long-lasting nodules need examination.

Q. Can I receive treatment immediately during a trip?

A. It is safer to leave time before departure to assess early reactions and access emergency contact.
