Staged facial reference examining lips, nasolabial folds and chin during filler-correction consultation; not an actual patient or result

Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid (HA) filler, used to correct overfilling, swelling and some nodules or in emergency treatment when vascular occlusion is suspected. It does not dissolve non-HA fillers such as calcium hydroxylapatite or PLLA. Responses vary with product, injected amount and time, so precise restoration of the original appearance in one session cannot be guaranteed.

01

Definition, benefits and precautions at a glance

Key consultation points
CategoryWhat to check
CandidatesHA filler overcorrection, displacement, some nodules or suspected vascular occlusion
LimitationsNo effect on non-HA filler; exact restoration cannot be guaranteed
RecoverySwelling, pain and bruising for several days or more; final assessment after swelling subsides
RisksPossible allergy, anaphylaxis, infection and tissue damage
EmergencySevere pain, pale/blue skin or visual symptoms require immediate response
02

Definitions and how the treatments work

Hyaluronidase breaks HA bonds to reduce filler viscoelasticity. Filler crosslinking, particles and injection plane, and enzyme formulation, concentration and contact time affect results; units of different products cannot simply be converted. Ultrasound may help locate filler, but is not necessary or available in every situation.

03

Potential benefits and limitations

Cosmetic overcorrection may be managed in small stages with reassessment after swelling subsides. Suspected vascular occlusion is a separate emergency requiring assessment and treatment without delay to reduce skin ischaemia and vision damage. Do not confuse criteria for planned correction with choosing to wait several days. Uncertainty increases if it is unknown whether filler is HA or when, where and how much was injected.

04

Suitable candidates and preliminary assessment

Assessment is needed for persistent overcorrection, asymmetry, displacement or nodules after HA filler or suspected vascular problems. Report bee or wasp venom allergy, prior hyaluronidase reactions, anaphylaxis, asthma, medications, pregnancy and breastfeeding. Active infection or inflammatory nodules of unknown cause require distinguishing infection from immune reactions rather than automatically injecting enzyme.

05

Procedure, recovery and preparation

Check filler product and records, symptom onset, skin colour and temperature, capillary refill and visual symptoms. For planned correction, obtain explanations of scope, uncertainty and allergy management, then monitor until post-injection swelling and bruising settle. Do not postpone emergency vascular occlusion for telephone consultation alone; use a system providing immediate care. Reassess goals and causes after tissues stabilise before further filler.

Staged safety preparation with an unlabelled empty ampoule-shaped container, gloves and gauze; not hyaluronidase or an actual product
06

Adverse effects, contraindications and precautions

Along with pain, swelling, bruising, itching and erythema, rare hives, angioedema and anaphylaxis are reported. Injection itself can also cause infection, bleeding and nerve or vessel injury. Cosmetic skin testing does not exclude every immediate or delayed allergy; testing must not delay treatment in emergency ischaemia. Blurred or reduced vision or severe eye pain requires immediate emergency care.

07

Differences between hyaluronidase, observation and non-HA filler management

Comparison of procedure differences
MethodMain goalKey differences and precautions
HyaluronidaseHA filler breakdownAssess allergy, product, dose and urgency
Follow-up observationMonitor mild early swelling and natural absorptionDo not wait with ischaemia or visual symptoms
Non-HA fillersSeparate ingredient-specific management for CaHA, PLLA and othersDoes not dissolve with hyaluronidase
New filler injectionReassess needed volume after stabilisationImmediate masking correction makes identifying the cause difficult

Questions and answers for a medical consultation

The answers below are literature-based consultation questions, not a clinician interview or individual diagnosis; actual medical review remains incomplete.

Q. Will all filler disappear in one session?

A. Formulation, amount, location and enzyme response vary; further assessment may be needed.

Q. Can I dissolve it first if the filler type is unknown?

A. Confirming HA status, past records and ultrasound can help; non-HA fillers do not respond.

Q. Can I wait until my appointment if skin is white and painful after nose filler?

A. Vascular occlusion is possible; immediately contact the treating clinic or a facility able to provide emergency assessment.

SEOLREIM’s principle of consultations and procedures performed personally by the director

SEOLREIM Clinic describes its principles of consultations and procedures performed personally by the clinic director, genuine products, appropriate quantities and attentive care. Consultation starts by distinguishing skin condition and goals, then checking the products and equipment actually available, approved uses, the dose or energy plan, recovery and risks. Signature filler and anti-aging consultations first check current filler composition, timing, plane and correction needs. Confirm actual hyaluronidase stock and emergency-response capacity before booking; do not wait for an appointment with vision or ischaemic symptoms.
