The first step in treating acne is to distinguish comedones, inflammatory lesions and established scars. Before seeking extraction or a laser, assess sebum, dead skin cells, inflammation, medicines and lifestyle factors. Prioritizing topical or prescription treatment when needed can help reduce recurrence and the risk of scarring.

Key search terms

02

Definition and mechanism

Acne involves follicular sebum, dead skin cells, microorganisms and inflammation together. Comedones call for management of dead skin cells and sebum, inflammatory lesions require inflammation control, and scars may need structural treatment once active lesions have settled. No single procedure addresses every stage.

03

Potential benefits and limitations

Appropriate cleansing, moisturization, sun protection, topical treatment and prescription medicines when indicated can reduce new lesions and control inflammation. Acne scars should be assessed separately from active acne. Red marks, brown marks and depressed scars need different approaches.

04

Who may be a candidate

A consultation may help people with recurrent comedones or inflammatory acne, acne not controlled by pharmacy treatments, or concern about scars. Seek care early for nodular or cystic lesions, sudden worsening, or a rapid increase in scarring.

05

Procedure and recovery

Assessment covers lesion type and severity, menstrual patterns, medicines, cosmetics and responses to previous treatments. Extraction is used selectively for suitable comedones; excessive extraction can increase inflammation and marks. The timing of laser, light and microneedling treatments depends on active lesions and the skin barrier.

Side effects, precautions and contraindications

Topical treatments can cause dryness, stinging and redness. Extraction and procedures can cause bruising, post-inflammatory pigmentation and infection. Disclose possible pregnancy, photosensitizing medicines, antibiotics or retinoids, and any history of herpes or keloids. Avoid squeezing lesions by hand or repeatedly using harsh scrubs.

07

How it differs from other treatments

Acne extraction is an adjunct that removes selected comedones. Light and laser treatments address inflammation, sebum or marks depending on the device and lesion. Radiofrequency microneedling and fractional laser treatment are often considered for scars and texture after active acne is controlled; they do not replace medicine.

08

Medical Q&A

Q. Can skincare alone improve acne? A. It may help mild cases, but recurrent or moderate-to-severe acne may need diagnosis and treatment. Q. Is more extraction better? A. Only suitable lesions should be treated safely. Q. Can I have scar laser treatment while I have acne? A. Active inflammation is generally stabilized first.

SEOLREIM's approach and signature programs

Seolreim Clinic does not treat pores, sebum, inflammation, red marks and depressed scars as one problem. After active acne is stabilized, a doctor compares the order of Silky Pore, laser, skin booster and scar treatments, while assessing the skin barrier and factors behind recurrence.
