IPL Results and Risks: Should Melasma, Dark Spots and Redness Be Treated the Same Way?
The Korean original has been medically reviewed; medical review of this translation is pending.

IPL uses intense light across several wavelength bands, rather than a single laser wavelength, to address superficial pigment and vascular redness. It may be used for freckles, dark spots and redness, but melasma can recur or worsen. Different lesions should not be treated with identical settings without a diagnosis.

Definition and mechanism
IPL delivers broad-spectrum light to produce a thermal response in pigment and vascular targets such as melanin and hemoglobin. Suitability varies with device filters, energy, skin tone and lesion depth. It is not identical to laser toning or picosecond laser treatment.
Potential benefits and limitations
Some superficial pigment, freckles, dark spots and redness may look lighter. Melasma, post-inflammatory pigmentation and deeper pigment may recur or respond only to a limited extent. A procedure alone does not eliminate the causes of pigmentation problems.
Who may be a candidate
Adults with a diagnosed lesion who can also follow sun protection and recurrence management may seek a consultation. Timing should be adjusted for recent tanning, dermatitis, wounds, photosensitizing medicines or a recent strong peel.
Procedure and recovery
Skin tone and lesions are assessed before selecting the filter, energy and treatment interval. Stinging and warmth can occur during treatment. Redness, dryness, temporarily darker pigment or small crusts can follow. Do not forcibly remove flakes or crusts; maintain moisturization and sun protection.

Side effects, precautions and contraindications
Burns, blisters, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation and scars can occur rarely. Appropriate settings and aftercare are especially important for darker skin tones. Tell the clinician about photosensitizing medicines, a history of herpes simplex, pregnancy or breastfeeding before the consultation.
How it differs from other treatments
Picosecond lasers and laser toning address pigment with specific wavelengths and modes. IPL can target pigment and blood vessels together using broader-spectrum light. Topical treatment, sun protection and daily management are fundamental for melasma; laser treatment should be selected cautiously according to diagnosis and skin response.
Medical Q&A
Q. Is IPL the best treatment for melasma? A. Melasma may recur or worsen, so one approach is not suitable for everyone. Q. My pigment looks darker afterward. A. This can be temporary, but burns and post-inflammatory pigmentation need to be distinguished. Q. Can I have treatment on the same day during a visit from abroad? A. This is decided after assessing your skin and medicines.

SEOLREIM's approach and signature programs
Seolreim Clinic distinguishes melasma, freckles, dark spots, post-inflammatory pigment and redness instead of recommending IPL uniformly under the term ‘whitening.’ A doctor compares the roles of picosecond toning, laser toning and sun protection, then plans intensity and intervals according to skin tone and barrier condition.
